Our Family Ski Trip to Breckenridge, CO: What We Loved & What We’d Do Differently
This winter, we packed up the family and headed to Breckenridge, Colorado for a snowy getaway. Known for its vast mountain and wide variety of ski trails, Breck seemed like the perfect choice for our mixed-skill group.
We flew into Denver International Airport and rented a Suburban from Sixt to get all six of us — plus luggage and gear — up the mountain. The drive went smoothly, and the vehicle had plenty of space for everything we needed.
Where We Stayed
We booked a 3-bedroom premium condo at the Village at Breckenridge, located right on Peak 9, and it turned out to be a great home base. This ski-in/ski-out location is directly at the base of the Quicksilver Lift, which made mornings on the slopes a breeze. The condo had humidifiers in every room (a lifesaver at high altitude), and we had ample storage space for skis, boots, and helmets right inside the entry.
It’s worth noting that parking is $50 per night, and while we didn’t drive during our stay, we were glad to have a car for the trip up and back down the mountain. Food and restaurants were within easy walking distance, which made evenings convenient.
One downside: the main bedroom faced the ski school, which is groomed nightly — and loudly — around 2:00 a.m. Light sleepers, consider bringing earplugs!
Ski School & Slope Time
Half of our group signed up for Ski School, and it was one of the highlights of the trip. Not only was it well-organized, but the biggest bonus was getting to bypass the long lift lines — a huge perk during busy season.
Altitude Adjustment
Something to be prepared for: Breckenridge sits at a higher elevation than many other resorts, and unfortunately, two of our group experienced altitude sickness after the first full day on the slopes. Thankfully, there’s an urgent care clinic located right in our condo complex. They were able to provide treatment and arrange for an in-room oxygen tank, which made a big difference and allowed us to enjoy the rest of our trip.
Final Thoughts
Overall, we had a fun and memorable weekend in Breck. The town itself is charming, the skiing is top-notch, and the location we stayed in was ideal for a ski-focused trip. That said, due to the challenges with the altitude and the size of the mountain, we’ll likely head back to Telluride next year — especially since I’m more of a laid-back, double-green skier. 😊
If you’re considering Breckenridge and are comfortable with high elevation and a large resort feel, this could be the perfect trip for you!
